Google now answers instead of listing. How Nepali businesses stay visible

NeuralYug8 min read

For twenty years, Google worked one way. You typed a question, it showed a list of links, and your job was to climb that list. In 2026 that page is changing under your feet. Ask Google something now and, more and more, it writes you an answer instead of handing you a list. The links move down, or disappear. For a business, this is not a small tweak. It changes what being found even means.

This is Google AI Mode. It is powered by Gemini, and as of the May 2026 update it is no longer an experiment. It is the default for millions of users, with a wider rollout underway. We build for the web from Nepal, so we have been watching this closely. Here is what changed and what to do about it.

From a list you scroll to an answer you read

The old page was a ranking. Ten blue links, and if you were third, a user could scroll and find you. The new page is a paragraph. Google reads the sources, writes a single answer, and names a few of them inside it. There is no list to scroll past. You are either quoted in that answer, or the searcher never sees you at all.

Two versions of the same search

Search: “best momo supplier in Kathmandu”

Ten blue links

← your listing, position 3

You rank third. A user scrolls, sees you, and can click through. Position is everything.

In AI Mode there are no numbered link positions below the answer. If the answer does not mention you, the searcher never sees you.

Why this matters more in Nepal

Nepal is mobile-first and moving fast. Around 16 million people are online here, and the large majority browse on a phone. On a small screen, an AI answer that fills the whole view is even more dominant. There is simply less room to scroll to a list. So the shift that is reshaping search everywhere hits harder here, and sooner.

There is an opening in this, too. A useful stat from the search world: a large share of the pages cited inside AI answers do not rank in Google's traditional top ten. That means a well-run local business can get named in an answer even if it never reached the top of the old list. The game is more open than it looks.

The new goal: get cited, not just ranked

People are calling this Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO. The name is new; the work mostly is not. Google's own May 2026 guidance is blunt about it: AEO is not a separate discipline. It is good SEO applied to an AI surface. Clear content, real expertise, fast pages, and structured data. If anything, the basics matter more now, because a machine has to trust your page enough to quote it.

Will AI search find you?

Six honest checks. Answer all to see your verdict.

  • Is your Google Business Profile complete, with correct name, address, hours, and photos?
  • Does each page answer a clear question in the first paragraph?
  • Do you have an FAQ section written in plain, direct language?
  • Is your site fast and readable on a phone?
  • Do other trusted Nepali sites or listings mention your business?
  • Do you add schema markup so machines can read your key facts?
Six honest checks to see whether AI search is likely to find and cite you.

What to do this quarter

  • Fix your Google Business Profile first. Correct name, address, hours, photos, and reviews. This is the single biggest lever for local AI answers.
  • Answer the question in the first line. Put the direct answer at the top of the page, then explain. Machines quote the clear bit.
  • Add a real FAQ in plain language. Match the way people actually ask, in the words they use.
  • Make the page fast and clean on a phone. Slow, cluttered pages get skipped by both people and machines.
  • Earn mentions from other trusted Nepali sites. Being named elsewhere tells the AI you are real.
  • Add schema markup. It hands your key facts to machines in a format they can read without guessing.

The search box is turning into an answer box. That feels threatening if you think of visibility as a ranking to defend. It is an opening if you think of it as a question to answer well. Write clearly, back it up, make your facts easy to read, and you give the AI every reason to name you. That is the whole game now.

Frequently asked

What is Google AI Mode?
It is a search experience where Google, powered by Gemini, writes a direct answer to your question instead of showing a list of links. For many searches this answer now sits at the top, and some users see it as the whole page.
Is SEO dead now?
No. Google's own guidance says optimizing for AI answers is not a separate skill. It is the same solid SEO applied to a new surface: clear content, real expertise, fast pages, and structured data. The basics matter more, not less.
How does a small Nepali business get cited in AI answers?
Complete your Google Business Profile, answer real questions in plain language, add an FAQ, keep your site fast on mobile, earn mentions from other trusted local sites, and add schema markup so machines can read your facts.
